Alsace Wine route E5

After Strasbourg we drove to Obernai to base ourselves there for the beginning of our cycle trip along ‘La Route des Vins d’Alsace’.  This is a 170 km route between Marlenheim and Thann.  On Friday afternoon we cycled from Obernai to Marlenheim and back then on Saturday we cycled to Mittelbergheim.  To be frank the views and village along the way are SO cute and pretty that it is difficult to know where to start!  So with that in mind what follows are just a few examples of what is ‘on offer’.

We have started stocking up on some of the lovely regional wine and having had two ‘tasting sessions’ so far it is good that we are not driving!

An ‘average high street’….

Some the villages have gated entrances….

The cycle path along the wine route is often very rural….

and we saw a couple of the ‘Storks of Alsace’.  Due to environmental changes, by the 1980’s only 2 breeding pairs were left in the wild, however after a careful program of research and breeding there are now over 400 pairs (still rare tho’)

A ‘town Hall’ (bit nicer than in the UK!)

Even the side streets are cute! (in the building in the foreground is one of 8 municipal wine presses dating back over 300 years)
